FOR STUDENTS

DIVE INTO NONFICTION AND THE WORLD OF SHARKS!

All writing begins with research. And what could be more exciting than researching sharks! Heather will share her research and writing process, focusing on Swimming with Sharks: The Daring Discoveries of Eugenie Clark. Engaging in hands-on activities, students will learn fascinating facts about sharks and why they deserve our respect and protection.
Grades K-5, 45 minutes, up to 75 students.

GOT GRIT?

What do all of Heather Lang’s books have in common? They're true stories about women who overcame obstacles and fought for their dreams. In this fun, interactive program, Heather discusses the obstacles she has faced during her journey as a writer and how grit helps her during the research, writing, and revision process. She will share her research process and how good detective work can make a story sing. Comparing first drafts and sketches with final copy and art, students will learn the importance of revision both for the author and illustrator. Heather will model important character-building strategies , such as setting goals and learning from failures, and students will come away with tips and tools that they can apply to their own writing and other facets of their lives.
Grades 2-5, 45 minutes, up to 75 students.

FOR EDUCATORS

GIRLS WITH GRIT: RESEARCHING AND WRITING ABOUT BRAVE WOMEN

Heather will discuss her picture book biographies about trailblazing women. Discover how these brave women inspire her and can inspire kids to be brave, set goals, and learn from failure. She’ll share how she transforms the spark of an idea into a book and discuss her research process. Join her on her exciting research adventure for Swimming with Sharks: The Daring Discoveries of Eugenie Clark. Then, comparing first drafts with final copy, Heather will reveal how she brings her stories to life with revision.

PRESENTATION FEES

·      School visits: $300 for one visit, $500 for two, $1000 for the day (including travel expenses outside 60 miles)
·      Virtual Visits: I give free 15 to 20 minute Skype visits on a limited basis.
